Harald Holmgren discovers pegmatite rock on the forest floor while hunting. With the help of 3 other workers, Harold begins mining the area. Numerous minerals are discovered in the forest, marking the beginning of one of Sweden’s richest mineral sites.

Recognizing the scale of the find and the growing costs, Harald sells the mine to local mining company, Boliden AB. Boliden scales up mining operations, and continues for another decade.

Boliden ceases operations in Varuträsk in 1947 due to post-WWII economic shift, lack of demand, and its inability to produce on a large scale. Metal demand patterns change causing Boliden increase investments into other mines. Varuträsk was special for its variability, but wasn't a feasible source of material.

With the mine dormant, snowmelt and rainwater flood the underground tunnels. The Varuträsk mine becomes inaccessible and nearly lost to history. In the 80's, several geological surveys were conducted. Although the area provides high scientific value, it was again concluded there was a lack of profit.

The dormant mine is purchased by the Varuträsk commune. Water is pumped out, the mine is repaired, and it is rebuilt with modern safety standards. The site becomes a historical museum accessible for visitors to tour.

The property is purchased by "Skellefteå Adventurepark".

The property is expanded, the forest cleaned and restored, the high ropes course is built, and the area becomes the center for outdoor activities.

Over the years, Skellefteå Adventurepark establishes itself as an increasingly more popular activity destination.

But as all things come and go, in 2026 the Adventurepark ownership has changed over to a new set of hands. The story of the Varuträsk mine and Adventurepark carries on.

About us, Skellefteå Adventurepark

Hello from the Adventurepark's new owners, Nina and Carson :)

Nina has worked at the park between her travels and studies for the past 5 years. She has an affinity for the parks spirt of nature mixed with thrill and history. She is also a fanatic world traveler which is how she met Carson in New Zealand. As the two travelled together on the opposite side of the planet, she continuously told Carson, "in my hometown I worked at this adventure park, it's amazing, you HAVE to come see it!"

Carson, originally from Oregon USA, who's a bicycle mechanic by trade, a musician, and all around tinkerer, thought this "Adventure Park" sounded amazing, but waaaay too cold for his lifestyle.

Life eventually brought the two to Skellefteå, where Nina finally got to show Carson the Adventurepark she'd talked so much about. As passionate adventurers and thrill seekers, they ran around the property in childlike excitement. The tall trees, endless greenery, and cheers from guests swinging through the ropes course was comforting and familiar. After traveling together and working in the tourism industry in other countries, they couldn't help but joke about what improvements could be done to amplify the park as a destination. Playful ideas turned into late night discussions, Google searches like “how to run a business as a newbie” or "how to build the worlds longest zipline" and a few existential crises along the way.

And somehow…here we are.

We arrive full of enthusiasm, curiosity, and big dreams for this special place. We see the Adventurepark as a welcoming and safe gathering place for all to enjoy nature. The magic forest of Northern Sweden is a gem that should be shared with groups big and small, with neighbors down the street, and with adventurers from the other side of the world. We also care deeply about protecting the surrounding nature while also making it accessible and meaningful for others. We’re excited to continue developing the grounds in the same footsteps as the previous owner - as an activity center, a social meeting place, and a living example of sustainability, creativity, local collaborations, and historic preservation. Most of all, we’re simply grateful to be part of this story and grateful to all the people who have helped along the way. We can hardly contain our excitement to be the next chapter for Skellefteå Adventurepark. Hope to meet you all!

How do I find the park?

Easiest way to get to Skellefteå Adventurepark is by driving on the 95. There will be a big blue and white sign with an arrow that points and reads "Varuträsk" and "Skellefteå Adventurepark". Turn there and continue driving about 500m until you see our orange sign, or our two flagpoles.

Do you close when it is too rainy, windy, snowy, or poor weather?

No. We operate in rain or shine. The only activity we may pause is the High Ropes course, and that would only be due to thunderstorms within 5km.

Is mosquito repellent provided?

No. We do our best to minimize mosquitos by draining any standing water, hanging over 20 bird houses, as well as over 15 bat boxes. But, we do not have repellent available for guests.
